Overview

Students may be eligible to gain professional experience in their field by completing short-term service for credit. Service Learning abroad is a great way to experience another culture, improve foreign language, and gain experience in your field, all while giving back to an international community.

Some majors require students to complete Service Learning as a part of their degree requirement, ranging anywhere from 3-9 credit hours. However, students may complete Service Learning even if it is not required by their degree. Simply verify with your academic advisor if Service Learning is a good fit for your plan of study.

Benefits of International Internships

Service Learning is an excellent way to apply ideas, concepts, theories, and principles acquired in an academic program to the real world. They allow you to establish and address personal and professional development goals; develop necessary skills and strategies; and identify your professional strengths and limitations. Whereas an internship focuses on professional development in your field, Service Learning goes a step further by pairing you with leaders in your sector to incorporate you in an ongoing project within the community.
